Bonito Cinesur festival and Rio Grande do Sul cultural program highlight South American cinema and music

Brazil's Bonito Cinesur festival opened on 24 July in Bonito (Mato Grosso do Sul) for its fourth edition, running until 1 August. The event will screen 32 South‑American films in competition, including the opening feature Querido Trópico (Panama/Colombia) by Ana Endara, a national premiere of Honestino about a disappeared student leader, and works from Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Peru and Paraguay. Actress Paulina García (Chile) will be honoured, and the program features environmental documentaries, regional productions, and free workshops for children and filmmakers.

Meanwhile, from 2–9 July Rio Grande do Sul staged a free cultural lineup in Porto Alegre, featuring the noir‑themed play “Coração Fatal,” concerts by Emicida and Negra Li, a tribute show by Cida Moreira, and the closing days of the 16th Cine Esquema Novo, which presented over 130 audiovisual works across five venues. The Ulbra Chamber Orchestra also performed a free concert of Chico Buarque’s songs.
