Bonny Island endorsed as national tourism destination
The Nigerian Federal Government has formally endorsed Bonny Island in Rivers State as a national tourism destination. This endorsement follows an official assessment by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, which identified the island as having significant potential for heritage, cultural, and eco-tourism development.
Key sites identified during the assessment include the King’s Palace, St Stephens Cathedral, the Former British Consulate, Finima Nature Park, and the local mangrove ecosystem. The Ministry noted that the island’s natural assets and the traditions of the Bonny people align with the government’s economic diversification agenda.
The recognition paves the way for the Bonny Island Tourism and Investment Summit, which is scheduled to take place from August 18 to 20, 2026.
