Bonny Island tourism development initiative

Overview

The Nigerian Federal Government has formally endorsed Bonny Island in Rivers State as a national tourism destination. Following an assessment by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, the island was identified for its potential in heritage, cultural, and eco-tourism, specifically highlighting sites such as the King’s Palace, Finima Nature Park, and the local mangrove ecosystem.

Building on this endorsement, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Renaissance Africa Energy Company announced support for a strategic initiative to develop tourism in the Bonny Kingdom. During the Bonny Island Tourism and Investment Summit, the NDDC outlined a three-year programme titled ‘Discover Bonny and Orange Economy’. The initiative aims to transform the region into a competitive tourism destination to diversify the Niger Delta economy and reduce its dependence on the oil and gas sectors.
