Boots sold to Wittington Investments in £7bn deal

The British pharmacy and retail chain Boots has been sold to Wittington Investments, the holding company of the Canadian billionaire Weston family, in a deal valued at approximately £7 billion ($8.9 billion). The acquisition from US private equity firm Sycamore Partners and the Pessina family marks a significant change for the 177-year-old retailer.

Boots currently operates around 1,800 stores and employs approximately 51,000 people. While the company has faced challenges such as declining footfall due to remote work trends, recent annual results showed a 3.2% increase in sales, reaching £7.5 billion.

Industry analysts suggest the new ownership may focus on upgrading the store portfolio. Potential investments could include revamping smaller locations to provide a more consistent experience and enhancing beauty halls to match the department-store feel seen in larger flagship stores. Experts note that while immediate changes are unlikely, fresh investment is expected to target the high-growth health and beauty sectors.
