The French football financial watchdog DNCG confirmed on 15 July 2024 that Girondins de Bordeaux will be excluded from all national competitions at the end of the 2025‑2026 season and will compete in Regional 1, the sixth tier of French football, next season. The sanction follows the club’s failure to secure the €10 million needed to meet financial requirements after British investment fund Sparta withdrew its backing.

Owner Gérard Lopez, who has stopped financing the club, is seeking a new buyer and has launched an appeal to the CNOSF to gain time. If a takeover does not materialise, the club faces a possible judicial liquidation, with a commercial‑court hearing scheduled later this month. Bordeaux, a historic side with six league titles (last in 2009) and multiple cup victories, has dropped from Ligue 1 to the regional divisions in just a few years, prompting concerns for French football.
