Bordeaux Wildfire Forces Massive Evacuations and Deployment of Thousands of Rescue Personnel

A fast‑moving wildfire near the Atlantic coast has pushed flames within about 15 km of Bordeaux city centre. French authorities have mobilised roughly 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 soldiers and 1,200 police officers, supported by aircraft and helicopters, to combat the blaze. At least seven firefighters have been injured and around 240 houses have been destroyed. More than 220,000 residents have been ordered to leave their homes; shelters such as the Parc des Expositions Bordeaux‑Lac have been opened with capacity for up to 10,000 evacuees. The fire has generated heavy smoke that has degraded air quality across the metropolitan area, prompting a surge in mask purchases. Officials are weighing the possibility of a full evacuation of Bordeaux. The emergency has also disrupted regional transport, closed a stretch of the A63 motorway and led to the shortening of a stage of the Tour de France. The situation is described by France’s interior minister as “very unfavourable,” and the mayor has warned that the fire is at the city's gates.
