France July 2026 heatwave, wildfires and hospital strain

Overview

Red‑alert conditions have begun to recede. On 13 July all 26 red heat alerts were downgraded to orange, though 69 departments remain on orange heat warnings and 11 on orange storm warnings as intense thunderstorms bring heavy rain, hail and wind gusts up to 100 km/h. The storms have caused fallen trees, power‑line damage, a lightning‑started house fire in Maine‑et‑Loire, flooding in Sarreguemines and widespread power outages, including a cinema in Angers.

The Fontainebleau forest fire continues to dominate the response. Within 48 hours the blaze consumed roughly 2,050 ha, prompting the evacuation of about 1,000 residents, the temporary closure of the A6 motorway and rail lines, and the evacuation of around 150 horses. Authorities have arrested two suspects – an 18‑year‑old with a lighter and a volunteer firefighter born in 2007 – linking the multiple ignition points to arson. The fire threatens residential areas, including guitarist Louis Bertignac’s property, and has raised air‑quality concerns.

Hospital systems in France and nearby Geneva remain strained by the summer heat, with longer emergency waits, postponed procedures and staff protests over indoor temperatures of 30‑40 °C. Geneva’s hospitals have set up a dedicated heat‑wave crisis unit.

In Paris, officials announced a major expansion of the Seine‑based district cooling network, aiming to supply cooling to more than 3,000 buildings—including hospitals and schools—by 2042, a measure intended to curb electricity demand and mitigate urban heat‑island effects.
