Bordeaux Wildfires Displace 220,000 and Threaten Wine Industry
Massive wildfires west of Bordeaux have burned an area four times the size of Paris, roughly 42,000 hectares (about 420 km²). More than 220,000 residents have been evacuated from the Gironde region, many of them accommodated in emergency shelters set up by local communes.
The flames have impacted around 39,000 businesses, including major aerospace and defence firms such as Airbus, Dassault and Thales, and have jeopardised the region’s wine tourism, a key driver of the local economy. Patrick Seguin, president of the regional chamber of commerce, described the situation as a "physical and economic apocalypse."
Airbnb announced it will provide free emergency accommodation to displaced residents in Gironde and the neighbouring Landes department, coordinating with prefectural authorities and local municipalities. Vineyard owner Edouard le Grix de la Salle warned that his Grand Verdus estate, located about 35 km from the fire front, faces severe economic damage.
