CAI and CNSAS issue joint safety guidelines for Italian mountains

The Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) and the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS) released a joint statement clarifying responsibilities, costs and best practices for mountain rescue in Italy. The communiqué refers to two recent incidents: an alpinist rescued at night on the West summit of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and a group of five hikers on the Gran Sasso who were caught by a summer thunderstorm after moving into an area without mobile coverage. Both cases underline that safety begins with proper planning, weather monitoring and an honest assessment of personal limits.

The organisations stress that callers should not hesitate to dial the national emergency number 112, provide precise location details and remain reachable. They also highlight the GeoResQ mobile app, which sends geolocated rescue requests and tracks the route. CAI members receive insurance coverage for rescue costs as part of their affiliation, and regional regulations determine any possible co‑payment by rescued persons.

The message aims to promote preventive preparation, encourage the use of available tools and assure the public that rescue operations are part of the public emergency system, not a financial barrier.
