Bornholm faces housing challenges amid budget constraints

Bornholm is facing several housing challenges following recent budget decisions and policy limitations. While the Danish government plans to increase and make permanent a fund for rent subsidies for vulnerable citizens, Bornholm's homeless population will not benefit. This is because the fund is restricted to municipalities with at least 40 homeless individuals, and Bornholm recorded only 32 in the latest count, despite the number of homeless people on the island projected to increase significantly by 2026.

Additionally, residents in several municipal care and disability housing units, including Stenbanen, Nexøhuset, and Aabo, face rent increases in 2027. The largest increase is proposed for Stenbanen at five percent. Conversely, the municipality has decided to take over the costs for communal kitchens and laundries, which were previously shared with residents, resulting in a compensation of approximately 1.9 million DKK to the housing departments.

Furthermore, the local budget agreement lacks funding for new social housing. Although the political parties SF and Socialdemokratiet campaigned on promises to increase affordable housing to support families and seniors, the current budget provides no allocation for the municipal co-financing required for new social housing projects. While private construction may continue, the municipality's ability to drive social housing development is currently constrained.
