Bornholm municipal administration and planning

Bornholms Regionskommune is managing various local administrative and fiscal matters. Initial developments focused on infrastructure and planning, including addressing subdivision rule errors in Sandvig to allow for smaller semi-detached house plots and proceeding with a bicycle path project in Rønne that does not require a formal environmental impact assessment. Regarding the 2027 municipal budget, four of the six political committees are slated for increased funding. The Children and School Committee is expected to grow from 534.6 million to 560.3 million DKK, while the Social and Employment Committee will increase from 1,588.7 million to 1,616.6 million DKK. The Environment and Business and Economy committees are also scheduled for increases. Conversely, the Elderly and Health and Culture and Local Community committees face budget reductions, though officials state these shifts reflect changes in task assignments and committee structures. Recent budget decisions have highlighted several housing challenges. Although the Danish government plans to increase a rent subsidy fund for vulnerable citizens, Bornholm’s homeless population will not benefit because the fund is restricted to municipalities with at least 40 homeless individuals, and Bornholm recorded only 32. Furthermore, residents in municipal care and disability housing units, such as Stenbanen, Nexøhuset, and Aabo, face rent increases in 2027, with Stenbanen facing a proposed five percent increase. While the municipality will take over costs for communal kitchens and laundries—resulting in a 1.9 million DKK compensation to housing departments—the budget lacks the municipal co-financing required for new social housing projects, constraining the local government's ability to drive social housing development. To address long-term debt and management, the municipality is implementing strict fiscal discipline for the 2027 budget. A new principle dictates that no supplementary appropriations will be granted from the municipal treasury; any area requiring additional funding must identify equivalent savings within its existing budget.
