Danish municipalities implement budget cuts amid public concern
Various Danish municipalities are facing significant budget cuts, leading to public protests and concerns over essential services. On Bornholm, over 2,000 citizens have signed a petition to prevent the closure of five libraries in Allinge, Gudhjem, Aakirkeby, Hasle, and Svaneke. Despite the scale of the protest, Mayor Frederik Tolstrup maintains that the cuts are necessary for savings.
In other areas, the impact of austerity is hitting education and childcare. The closure of Frederiksodde Skole, a special education school, has caused distress among parents of children with disabilities, who argue that a replacement plan has not been established. Additionally, budget measures include closing Herslev Børnehave and increasing fees for after-school programs (SFO).
In Hjørring Municipality, a budget agreement for 2027–2030 includes a plan to reduce the number of city council members from 31 to 29. While this is expected to save approximately 330,000 DKK by 2030, critics note the limited economic impact relative to the municipality's broader financial challenges and express concerns regarding reduced political representation for smaller parties and rural areas.
