Borno State families demand rescue of schoolchildren held for 100 days

Families and community leaders in Borno State, Nigeria, have staged protests and held press conferences to demand the urgent rescue of dozens of schoolchildren and travelers held in captivity for nearly 100 days.

The primary focus of the outcry concerns the abduction of approximately 42 to 46 students from Mussa Primary and Junior Day Secondary School on May 15, 2026. Additionally, 36 students and a teacher remain missing following an attack on Government Day Secondary School in Lassa on June 29, 2026. Other victims include 38 people seized along the Buratai Road to Maiduguri.

Representatives of the Hawul/Askira-Uba Elders Forum and local lawmakers, including Hon. Midala Balami, have presented a 7-point demand to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babagana Zulum. They are calling for an intelligence-led rescue operation, increased protection for schools and major roads, and transparent communication with the affected families. The community has expressed frustration, comparing the slow response to the successful rescue of abducted children in Oyo State.

Governor Zulum stated that the Borno State Government is working closely with the Federal Government to ensure the safe return of the children. While the military has indicated it is aware of the situation, families report living in constant fear and uncertainty as the captives remain missing.
