Kidnappings and abductions in Borno State

Overview

In Borno State, Nigeria, families and political leaders are facing a crisis following the abduction of numerous residents, including schoolchildren and travelers.

By mid-August, families of 52 kidnapped residents reported selling their homes to prepare for anticipated ransom demands. Spokesperson Hassan Yati noted that families are also facing financial exploitation from fraudsters posing as abductors.

As the captivity of victims has exceeded 100 days, community leaders and parents have intensified calls for urgent military and government intervention. Senator Mohammed Ndume has advocated for the rescue of students taken from the Mussa and Lassa communities, as well as passengers seized along Buratai road. Reports indicate that at least 78 students were abducted from Mussa and Lassa in May and June. Parents have appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu, citing the extreme mental and physical distress caused by the prolonged uncertainty.

By late August, families and community leaders have escalated their response through protests and press conferences. Specific focus remains on the May 15 abduction of approximately 42 to 46 students from Mussa Primary and Junior Day Secondary School, and the June 29 attack on Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, which left 36 students and a teacher missing. Additionally, 38 people were seized along Buratai Road.

Representatives of the Hawul/Askira-Uba Elders Forum and lawmaker Hon. Midala Balami have presented a 7-point demand to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babagana Zulum. These demands include intelligence-led rescue operations, increased protection for schools and major roads, and transparent communication. While Governor Zulum stated the state is working with the Federal Government to ensure the safe return of the children, families continue to report living in constant fear.
