BIST 100 falls sharply as short‑sale uptick rule is activated
On 30 July 2026 the BIST 100 index of Borsa İstanbul slid about 1.5 % to roughly 13,293 points after a prior drop of more than 2 % triggered the market’s short‑sale uptick rule. The rule, also known as the “Uptick Rule”, requires any short‑sale transaction to be executed at a price higher than the previous trade price and was applied to all short‑sale order queues in the Pay Market until the close of the trading session.
The decline was reinforced by global factors: the U.S. Federal Reserve kept its policy rate in the 3.50‑3.75 % range, and ongoing Middle‑East geopolitical tensions dampened risk appetite. Within Turkey, the banking sector fell sharply while chemicals, petroleum and plastics posted modest gains of about 0.9 %. Total market turnover for the day was between 160 billion and 173 billion Turkish lira.
Bank of America clients contributed to the selling pressure, recording a net disposition of 1.2 billion TL. The biggest single sale was Yapı ve Kredi Bankası (YKBNK) with 609.2 million TL of shares sold.
