Turkey investment funds crisis triggers Borsa Istanbul decline

A significant liquidity crisis involving investment funds has caused substantial volatility in Borsa Istanbul. The BIST 100 index has faced heavy selling pressure, testing support levels near 11,300 points following the fallout from fund liquidations. Reports indicate that the IPO index has seen losses approaching 54% over a 40-day period due to the impact of these liquidations on specific portfolios.

Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek stated that 66 of 131 funds have been completely liquidated, with several portfolio management companies also undergoing full liquidation. This crisis has raised concerns regarding market transparency and investor protection, as hundreds of thousands of individual investors are affected. MSCI has also warned that Turkey’s emerging market status could be at risk following these developments.

In the banking sector, Garanti BBVA CEO Mahmut Akten noted that while there has been no major crisis impact on the banking industry itself, the high-interest environment continues to pressure equity profitability. Akten expressed expectations for potential interest rate cuts by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey if inflation continues its downward trend.
