Borsa İstanbul implements short-selling rules and index changes

Borsa İstanbul and the Capital Markets Board (SPK) have implemented several measures to stabilize the Turkish equity markets amid a liquidity crisis involving investment funds. To curb volatility and prevent rapid price declines, Borsa İstanbul has activated the 'uptick rule' for short selling in both the BIST 50 and BIST 100 indices.

Regarding the ongoing investment fund liquidation crisis, the SPK has extended the maximum liquidation period for affected funds from three months to six months. Additionally, the regulator has removed the upper limit on total costs for share buybacks.

The market is also undergoing significant structural changes. Borsa İstanbul announced its index revisions for the fourth quarter of 2026, which include the removal of 27 companies from the BIST 100 index and the addition of 27 new companies. Notably, Destek Finans Faktoring has been removed from the BIST 30, BIST 50, and BIST 100 indices.

Amidst these developments, reports indicate significant capital movement, including a single instance where an unidentified investor withdrew 45 billion lira from an eight-person fund in one night, drastically reducing the fund's total assets.
