Borsa İstanbul volatility sparks calls for market accountability
Political leaders in Turkey are calling for accountability following significant volatility and a fund crisis within Borsa İstanbul. Mustafa Destici, Chairman of the Great Unity Party (BBP), emphasized that market fluctuations directly impact citizens' savings, particularly those choosing Turkish Lira over foreign currency. He urged the Capital Markets Board (SPK) to take decisive action against manipulation and speculative activities that undermine investor confidence and the national economy.
Adding to the scrutiny, Yeni Party MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu highlighted a massive discrepancy in fund valuations, alleging that a loss of 525 billion lira occurred between September and November. Tanrıkulu pointed to extreme valuation spikes in certain funds and called for both administrative and political responsibility, noting that the capital markets fall under the supervision of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. He criticized the lack of visible action against management boards despite ongoing investigations by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
