Bosnia and Herzegovina advances transplantation medicine

Medical institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina are reporting significant advancements in transplantation medicine. At the University Clinical Center Tuzla, the hematology and stem cell transplantation team successfully performed an autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant for a multiple myeloma patient using a fresh, non-cryopreserved graft. This procedure was particularly complex as the patient required chronic hemodialysis, necessitating precise coordination between cell collection, high-dose melphalan therapy, and reinfusion.

In Mostar, the University Clinical Hospital is working to transition kidney transplantations into a regular clinical practice following its first successful procedure. During a transplantation medicine symposium, officials discussed the importance of donor education and the national effort to join Eurotransplant. Bosnia and Herzegovina has submitted a letter of intent to Eurotransplant, with a draft agreement currently under review by entity ministries and hospital administrations to establish a stable and sustainable transplant system.
