Transplantation medicine developments in Bosnia and Herz

Bosnia and Herzegovina is working to advance its transplantation medicine through both international cooperation and domestic clinical developments. To address the fact that the country is not a member of Eurotransplant, the Health Insurance Fund of Republika Srpska has expanded its medical cooperation with Belarus. This partnership, which began in 2021 and has already facilitated over 90 kidney transplants, now includes liver transplants and preoperative preparations.

Domestically, medical institutions are reporting advancements in specialized procedures. At the University Clinical Center Tuzla, teams have successfully performed complex autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplants. Meanwhile, in Mostar, the University Clinical Hospital is working to establish kidney transplantations as a regular clinical practice.

Efforts to join Eurotransplant continue, with a letter of intent submitted in January 2024. While administrative and political obstacles at the entity-level ministries have caused delays, a draft agreement is currently under review by ministries and hospital administrations to establish a sustainable national transplant system.
