Bosnia and Herzegovina adopts monthly veteran benefit for former combatants

The Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina approved a draft law amending the Law on the rights of demobilised veterans and their families. The amendment introduces a monthly "borački dodatak" of 1.50 convertible marks for each month of service during the war period from 8 April 1992 to 23 December 1995.

Eligibility covers demobilised combatants who served at least one year and members of the families of deceased or missing veterans who already receive benefits under existing legislation. The draft estimates around 383,494 eligible recipients, with an annual budget impact of roughly 234.7 million KM.

The law stipulates equal treatment for veterans of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Croatian Defence Council and the Ministry of Interior, and applies uniformly across the entire territory of the Federation. Application procedures, documentation requirements and implementation rules are to be defined within 60 days after the law enters force. The proposal, prepared by a working group created in February 2025, has been forwarded to the Parliament of the Federation for final approval.
