Bosnia and Herzegovina faces backlash over glorification of Ratko Mladić

Incidents involving the glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić have sparked legal and political reactions in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In one instance, members of the SDP filed criminal complaints against several high-ranking officials, including Milorad Dodik, Nenad Stevandić, Staša Košarac, and Draško Stanivuković. The complaints allege that these officials approved, denied, or attempted to justify genocide and war crimes through public praise of Mladić.

The OSCE has called for urgent and uncompromising action from the judiciary to uphold the rule of law by investigating and documenting such acts regardless of the perpetrator's identity. This comes amid concerns that only two people have been successfully convicted in the country for glorifying war crimes.

In Tomislavgrad, the HDZ BiH has demanded the immediate dismissal of a doctor at the local health center after she posted a message of thanks to Mladić on social media. The health center's director stated that while the institution cannot control private opinions outside of working hours, the glorification of war criminals violates the facility's ethical and professional codes. The administration has announced it will initiate legal and disciplinary proceedings to address the matter.
