Bosnia and Herzegovina faces disputes over ethnic representation

Political tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina are rising over issues of ethnic representation within state institutions. Parliamentary Assembly member Šemsudin Mehmedović has alleged that the SNSD and HDZ parties control 81 percent of the country’s most important institutions. Mehmedović claims that Bosniaks and other minority groups are underrepresented in various state bodies and has proposed amendments to the Law on Administration to prioritize underrepresented groups when filling vacancies.

Simultaneously, debates regarding the electoral system and the Dayton Agreement continue to fuel friction between Bosniak and Croat political factions. Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman has advocated for greater equality for Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, citing concerns that the current system allows the Bosniak majority to influence the election of the Croat member of the Presidency. Conversely, discussions highlight that the current framework provides Croats with significant participation in various levels of government, including the position of Prime Minister.
