Bosnia-Herzegovina political trust crisis

In late July 2026, political commentator Ognjen Tadić warned that eroding trust in Sarajevo’s institutions threatened the stability of Bosnia‑Herzegovina’s multi‑ethnic state. He argued that attempts by the central government to adjust the Dayton‑based constitutional balance were seen by Republika Srpska as encroachments on entity rights, deepening mistrust and leaving the country vulnerable to political rivalry and conflict.

A week later, Darijana Filipović emphasized that lasting stability requires constitutional equality for the three constituent peoples, especially guaranteeing legitimate Croat representation in the House of Peoples. She linked these reforms to Bosnia’s EU accession prospects, noting that rule‑of‑law improvements and functional institutions are essential for accessing EU funds and achieving broader security.

By early August, these tensions intensified regarding the distribution of power. Parliamentary Assembly member Šemsudin Mehmedović alleged that the SNSD and HDZ parties control 81 percent of the country’s most important institutions, claiming Bosniaks and other minority groups are underrepresented. Mehmedović proposed amendments to the Law on Administration to prioritize underrepresented groups for vacancies.

Simultaneously, friction persists between Bosniak and Croat factions over the electoral system. Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman has advocated for greater equality for Croats, citing concerns that the current system allows the Bosniak majority to influence the election of the Croat member of the Presidency. Conversely, some discussions highlight that the existing framework already provides Croats with significant participation in various levels of government, including the position of Prime Minister.
