Bosnia and Herzegovina faces agricultural crisis amid drought and high food imports
Bosnia and Herzegovina is facing a multifaceted agricultural and economic crisis. The country imported 2.7 billion KM of food products in the first half of 2026, resulting in a trade deficit exceeding 2 billion KM. This high dependency on imports is compounded by severe domestic production issues.
Fruit growers report that while harvests of apples and pears are record-breaking, high temperatures have caused significant damage. Over 50 percent of production is of lower quality due to heat burns, which will prevent exporters from meeting quotas for the Russian market. Much of this fruit is expected to be diverted to processing.
In the grain sector, corn yields in regions like Semberija have plummeted to as low as 150–500 kg per hectare due to drought. Farmers report being in deficit by 300 to 500 KM per hectare because of high costs for fuel and seeds. Similarly, milk producers in the Federation of BiH are struggling as purchase prices fall below production costs, threatening the survival of many family farms. The drought has also caused over 50 percent damage to silage corn, jeopardizing winter livestock feed supplies.
