Overview

The Balkan region continues to face severe agricultural and environmental crises driven by extreme heat and prolonged drought. Nedžad Bićo, president of the Association of Farmers of the Federation of BiH, has warned that rising production costs for seeds, fertilizer, and fuel, combined with crop damage, could cause food prices to rise by more than 20 percent. While Federal Minister of Agriculture Kemal Hrnjić has expressed optimism regarding food price stability, agricultural representatives argue that bureaucratic hurdles are delaying necessary aid. Farmers are calling for the official declaration of an elementary disaster to secure government assistance.

In the Una-Sana Canton, beekeepers report a multi-year decline in honey yields. Nisvet Mujanović, President of the Beekeepers Union of USK, stated that extreme temperature fluctuations and droughts have caused the loss of bee colonies, leaving the sector unstable and heavily dependent on government subsidies.

Livestock production is also under pressure. In Montenegro, breeders in the Pljevlja region face shortages of hay and grass. Milko Živković, President of the Union of Livestock Breeders of Northern Montenegro, warned that high market prices and poor yields could lead to a significant reduction in the regional livestock population. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, extreme heat has decreased milk production and increased farm water demand, raising concerns regarding animal feed availability for the upcoming winter.

Forestry management in Bosnia and Herzegovina remains complicated by a legislative vacuum. Minister Kemal Hrnjić noted that a lack of a unified Forest Law for 17 years has left management fragmented across nine cantons. Meanwhile, Serbia has expanded its protected natural areas to 951,000 hectares to mitigate increasing natural disasters.
