Balkans face tension over glorification of Ratko Mladić
A wave of public glorification of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić is causing significant political and legal tension across the Balkans. In Montenegro, the Bosniak Party has condemned an event in Bar where Mladić was celebrated at a local cultural center, calling it a “cultural collapse” and urging authorities to act against such war-inciting manifestations.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, thousands of reports have been filed with the Prosecutor's Office regarding the glorification of Mladić. While some disciplinary actions have been taken within the Armed Forces, including dismissals, critics argue that criminal prosecutions remain stalled. Meanwhile, Saša Magazinović, head of the Parliamentary Assembly delegation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has called on the Council of Europe to consider measures, including the suspension of Serbia's representation rights, following state-level honors paid to Mladić.
In Montenegro, judicial responses have been criticized as inconsistent. While misdemeanor proceedings were initiated against individuals for displaying banners, high-ranking officials and religious leaders have not faced similar scrutiny, leading to concerns regarding the transparency and effectiveness of the state prosecution.
