Wildfires impact Blidinje Nature Park and Brač island
Wildfires continue to impact the Balkan region, with significant activity in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. In the Blidinje Nature Park, the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina have deployed helicopters to combat fires in the Masna Luka area. During one morning session, helicopters dropped 11,000 liters of water to target inaccessible terrain. While the fire in Masna Luka was reported as localized on Saturday night, authorities are still managing the situation.
Police in Bosnia and Herzegovina have arrested a 24-year-old man from Kladno on suspicion of accidentally causing the Blidinje fire during construction work. This incident follows a devastating season; data from the European Forest Fire Information System indicates that 78,668 hectares of forest have burned across 243 fires in the country this year.
In Croatia, a major fire on the island of Brač has been localized after burning approximately 5,000 hectares. Firefighting efforts involved multiple local units and aerial support. In response to the Brač intervention, the Mayor of Rijeka visited the Rijeka public fire brigade to thank them for their service.
