Overview

Wildfires and localized fire incidents continue to affect the Balkans and Mediterranean. In Croatia, the fire at the Metis recycling center in Kukuljanovo has escalated into a political dispute. Nikola Grmoja, leader of the Most party, has called for urgent inspections of companies owned by Petar Pripuz, citing the frequency of fires at waste management sites as evidence of ineffective state oversight. Pripuz has defended his CIOS Group, stating that the companies have undergone 365 inspections by state authorities over the last six years and accusing Grmoja of seeking political gain. Data indicates at least 15 waste-related fires have occurred in Croatia this year.
