Bosnia and Herzegovina prepares for 2026 elections with new technology
The Central Election Commission (CIK) of Bosnia and Herzegovina is implementing significant technological and administrative preparations for the General Elections scheduled for October 4, 2026. The CIK has introduced new biometric identification devices and optical scanners to modernize the electoral process, aiming to increase transparency, accuracy, and efficiency. These tools are designed to verify voter identities via fingerprints or smart cards to prevent multiple voting and fraud, while optical scanners will allow for electronic counting of paper ballots to accelerate result publication.
Administrative actions are also underway, including the distribution of ballots to over 48,000 voters residing abroad. Additionally, the CIK has begun imposing fines on political parties, such as the PSS-Draško Stanivuković coalition and SNSD, for engaging in premature election campaigning or misusing public resources.
Candidate lists for various levels of government, including the Assembly of Hercegbosanska Županija and the House of Representatives, have been verified and published. These lists feature many prominent political figures and current officials. Meanwhile, discussions continue regarding legislative proposals aimed at ensuring proportional representation of constituent peoples within public institutions.
