Bosnia and Herzegovina launches Alert.ba environmental reporting platform

Citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina can now report environmental issues such as illegal landfills, fires, floods, landslides, and air pollution through the new Alert.ba platform. The digital tool, accessible via mobile or computer without an app, allows users to photograph a problem and tag its GPS location. The system automatically identifies the municipality and proximity to sensitive areas like schools or forests. To prevent misuse, an administration reviews all reports before they appear on a public interactive map. The platform also features a specific category for air pollution, which is a major issue in cities like Sarajevo and Tuzla, allowing reports without photos. Monthly summary reports are automatically sent to relevant local institutions.

In Croatia, the city of Rijeka is introducing a model to reward citizens who report illegal waste disposal. Under the proposal presented by Mayor Iva Rinčić, informants could receive 50 percent of the fine paid by the offender. For example, a report leading to a 260 euro fine for an individual would result in a 130 euro reward. Rijeka also plans to reward local committees with the highest number of reports through funding for public space improvements. Similarly, the city of Opatija has implemented a reward system for providing reliable information on offenders, though the financial structures and administrative authorities differ from Rijeka’s model.
