Bosnia and Herzegovina political parties negotiate government formation

Political parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina have entered a new phase of negotiations following the confirmation of election results. In Republika Srpska, the SNSD has identified the formation of local government as its immediate priority, with spokesperson Radovan Kovačević stating that the party maintains an agreement with HDZ BiH to enter government together, asserting that neither party will participate without the other.

In Sarajevo, the SDP BiH Cantonal Committee has expressed its intention to take a leading role in the Sarajevo Canton Assembly. The party reported obtaining 38,214 votes and nine mandates, representing a 50 percent increase in mandates compared to the previous election cycle. The committee also voiced support for President Adnan Šteta and emphasized that the party will not act as a political appendage to other entities.

On a national level, the process of constituting new institutions remains uncertain. While the inauguration of the Presidency is expected in mid-December, the formation of the Council of Ministers could face delays. Some political figures suggest that the timeline for a new government could extend into 2027, depending on the ability of major parties, including SNSD, SDA, and HDZ BiH, to reach agreements.
