Bosnia and Herzegovina receives first biometric election equipment

The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has taken delivery of the first contingent of biometric voter‑identification devices and ballot‑scanning equipment. The shipment includes 150 biometric ID units and 150 scanners, which will undergo initial configuration and technical testing after customs clearance. Test runs are scheduled for 17‑18 August 2026, after which the commission will decide on formal acceptance.

The full delivery is expected by 25 September, ahead of the upcoming general elections. New ballot designs will no longer list candidate names; voters will mark a party circle and then select up to three candidates by number. Officials warn that the redesign, announced only weeks before the vote, could confuse voters. The commission plans voter‑education campaigns and will limit assistance to one voter per helper to prevent family voting. Transparency International Bosnia and Herzegovina has called for an extensive public information effort, noting the high number of invalid ballots in the previous election.
