Bosnia and Herzegovina to hold test elections on September 11
The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Bosnia and Herzegovina has scheduled test elections for September 11, 2026, to be held in all municipalities and cities from 9:00 to 15:00. These tests serve as a simulated election process to verify the functionality, integrity, security, and reliability of new election technologies ahead of the general elections on October 4, 2026.
The new technological suite includes biometric data verification, voter authentication, ballot scanners, and electronic transmission of results. These measures are intended to enhance transparency and reduce the potential for electoral fraud. The testing will also include a comprehensive assessment of the cybersecurity and digital forensic readiness of the electoral information technology system.
In preparation for the general elections, Davor Ivo Stier has been selected to lead a European Parliament observation mission consisting of 12 MEPs. The mission will monitor the entire process, from the pre-election campaign to the counting of votes, to ensure impartiality and democratic integrity. The upcoming elections are significant as they will be the first in the country to utilize these specific digital technologies.
