Bosnia and Herzegovina unveils virtual war‑memory app and selects monument for Prijedor children

BIRN BiH introduced the mobile application “Virtualna sjećanja”, which uses augmented‑reality to display virtual monuments at sites of wartime crimes that lack official markers. The app incorporates court‑verified facts, survivor testimony, archival photos and an interactive map, aiming to educate young people and the diaspora about the country’s recent history. European Union officials praised the project as a step toward transitional justice and EU integration.

In Prijedor, a design competition for a memorial to the 102 children killed during the war concluded with a winning proposal by Sarajevo architects Zulejha Šabić‑Zatrići and Asmir Šabić. The concept features white vertical elements representing families and life, contrasted with dark forms symbolising death, and incorporates the victims’ names and a light line suggesting hope. The monument will be placed in a park, creating a space for contemplation and remembrance.

Both initiatives reflect ongoing efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina to commemorate the conflict, address gaps in official memorialisation, and support the broader process of transitional justice.
