Bosnia and Herzegovina's High Representative Christian Schmidt Resigns Amid US Pressure

Former High Representative Christian Schmidt said he left his post after facing significant pressure from the United States, which he could not fully explain. In an interview, Schmidt attributed the pressure to a key member of the Peace Implementation Council and noted that the U.S. stance differed from that of the EU.

German politicians also criticised the American involvement. Anton Hofreiter, chair of the Bundestag’s EU committee, argued that U.S. interests in Bosnia focus on economic gains rather than regional peace, warning that the dispute could weaken the High Representative’s authority. Fellow Green Party member Boris Mijatović echoed concerns about U.S. influence on the appointment, while CDU MP Michael Brand said the U.S. prioritises economic projects while Europe seeks stability.

Schmidt highlighted upcoming electoral reforms, including biometric voter identification, and expressed hope that his successor and the OSCE will continue to uphold the rule of law.
