Srebrenica genocide 31st anniversary marked across Bosnia and beyond
July 11 1995 marked the massacre of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica, recognized as genocide by the International Court of Justice and the ICTY. The 31st anniversary was commemorated at the Potočari Memorial Centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where ten newly identified victims were buried and a collective funeral held. Thousands of families, survivors, and international delegations attended ceremonies that included prayers, flower‑laying, and a peace march retracing the 1995 route.
Croatian parliamentary speaker Gordan Jandroković warned that “historical evils develop gradually” and urged education about the crimes. UN Secretary‑General António Guterres stressed the need to protect truth from denial and revisionism. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 11 July the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide.
Commemorations extended beyond Bosnia: Turkish city Bornova held a ceremony at a local Srebrenica monument, and 200 Turkish students were sent to Bosnia to join the peace walk. Traffic authorities in Bosnia warned of congestion on routes to Potočari. Survivors and NGOs highlighted ongoing denial and the importance of preserving memory for future generations.
