Bosnia‑Herzegovina's Trust Crisis in Political Sarajevo

Political commentator Ognjen Tadić warns that trust is the core safeguard of Bosnia‑Herzegovina’s complex, multi‑ethnic state. He argues that once trust in the political institutions of Sarajevo erodes, constitutional mechanisms and legal decisions can no longer assure stability, turning governance into perpetual rivalry.

Tadić notes that the leadership of Republika Srpska views ongoing attempts by the central government in Sarajevo to adjust the constitutional balance established by the Dayton Peace Agreement as a systematic encroachment on the entity’s rights and on the rights of the constituent peoples. This divergent perception fuels a deep, lasting mistrust, making any new conflict more severe because there is no reserve of confidence to mediate it. He concludes that political violence or legal pressure cannot substitute for genuine trust among the country’s key actors.
