Romania economic data shows declining purchasing power despite wage growth

Economic data from Romania indicates that while nominal wages and pensions have seen slight increases, rising inflation is eroding the purchasing power of citizens. In July, the average net salary rose 5.5% year-on-year to 5,820 lei, but the real income index fell to 97.5% as price increases outpaced wage growth.

Pensioners are facing similar challenges. The average state social insurance pension reached 2,942 lei in the second quarter of 2026, a nominal increase of only 0.3% from the previous quarter. Due to inflation, the real value of pensions decreased by approximately 1.9%. Significant regional disparities exist: Bucharest reports the highest average pension at 3,579 lei, while Botoșani has the lowest at 2,229 lei.

To mitigate financial strain, the state is providing additional financial aid to low-income pensioners. Through the end of 2026, beneficiaries with monthly incomes up to 3,000 lei will receive supplemental payments ranging from 300 to 500 lei, depending on their income bracket. Additionally, specific regulations govern survivor pensions, which are restricted to children and surviving spouses under certain conditions.
