Botswana celebrates 60 years of independence with cultural and diamond showcases

Botswana is celebrating its 60th anniversary of independence through a series of cultural and economic showcases. In Gaborone, the National Museum and Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition featuring historical records, cultural artifacts, and displays covering themes from democracy to environmental sustainability. This celebration included a fashion show on Independence Avenue that utilized historical eras as inspiration for contemporary design.

In New York, the House of Botswana hosted the “60 Jewels of Botswana: The Diamond Story” exhibition. The event highlighted how diamond revenues have funded national development in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. During the celebration, President Duma Boko expressed optimism regarding the natural diamond industry, stating, “Beware of the power of the bounce back.”

Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo outlined a long-term strategy to transition the nation from diamond mining toward greater involvement in manufacturing, branding, and technology within the global diamond supply chain.
