Botswana 60th independence anniversary celebrations

Overview

Botswana is marking its 60th anniversary of independence through various cultural, economic, and traditional activities.

In Gaborone, the National Museum and Art Gallery is hosting exhibitions on democracy and environmental sustainability, complemented by fashion shows. Internationally, the House of Botswana in New York hosted the ‘60 Jewels of Botswana: The Diamond Story’ exhibition to highlight how diamond revenues have supported national infrastructure, education, and healthcare. President Duma Boko expressed optimism for the diamond industry, stating, “Beware of the power of the bounce back,” while Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo detailed strategies to transition the nation toward diamond manufacturing and technology.

As part of the celebrations, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism authorized the hunting of approximately 23 elephants across eight districts to provide meat for needy rural communities and manage the nation’s elephant population, estimated at 130,000. This decision has faced significant criticism. Conservationists, including the Elephant Protection Society, described the move as “reckless,” warning that killing herd members could make remaining elephants more defensive and increase human-wildlife conflict.

The policy has also sparked a political confrontation. Former president and Bangwato paramount chief Ian Khama opposed the allocation of elephants to the Serowe District, arguing that normalizing hunting for celebrations risks treating wildlife as a commodity rather than a protected resource. In response, Environment and Tourism Minister Wynter Mmolotsi stated that Khama lacks the authority to interfere with government wildlife decisions and confirmed the offer to the people of Serowe remains valid. While the African savanna elephant is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Botswana has maintained hunting quotas since lifting a ban in 2019 to mitigate damage to crops and infrastructure.
