Botswana elephant slaughter for Independence celebrations draws criticism
Botswana's Ministry of Environment and Tourism has authorized the killing of elephants to provide meat for the country's 60th Independence celebrations. The allocation, involving approximately 23 to 25 elephants, is intended for traditional feasting across eight different districts.
Conservationists have criticized the decision, arguing it undermines Botswana's reputation for wildlife protection. Oaitse Nawa, chairman of the Elephant Protection Society, stated that government-sanctioned slaughter could send a message to poachers that killing elephants is acceptable, potentially weakening anti-poaching efforts and international conservation standing.
Additional concerns have been raised regarding the distribution of the meat. Local officials have questioned the hygiene and fairness of crowds gathering around carcasses, suggesting that meat should be processed into smaller packages to better accommodate elderly people, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities. There are also concerns regarding the consumption of game meat during an ongoing foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
