Bottle gourd consumption warning issued over poisoning risk
Bottle gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) are a common dietary staple in Vietnam due to their high water content and low calorie count. While they provide essential vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, B vitamins, iron, and phosphorus, health experts warn of a specific danger during consumption.
According to traditional medicine practitioner Bui Dac Sang of the Hanoi Traditional Medicine Association, individuals should never consume bottle gourds if they exhibit an unusual bitter taste, as this indicates a risk of poisoning.
In traditional medicine, the gourd is used for its cooling properties to help with detoxification and diuresis. However, experts emphasize that while the vegetable can support hydration, it is not a substitute for medical treatments for conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease.
