BPJS Kesehatan expands JKN coverage to 98.6% of Indonesia's population

As of September 1, 2026, Indonesia’s National Health Insurance (JKN) program has expanded its coverage to approximately 284.3 million people, representing over 98.6 percent of the national population. BPJS Kesehatan is now shifting its focus from increasing membership volume to improving the quality of care through a ‘Value-Based Health Care’ approach.

One major priority is managing heart disease, which accounted for approximately Rp17.35 trillion in JKN funding in 2025. To address high hospital costs and rising cases, BPJS Kesehatan is pushing for stronger primary healthcare (FKTP) services. This includes enhancing preventive measures, such as blood pressure and blood sugar control, and ensuring primary clinics are equipped with electrocardiograms (EKG) to detect heart issues early.

Additionally, BPJS Kesehatan has recognized 30 healthcare facilities for their commitment to service quality through the Seva Paramahita Award 2026. The organization is also working to integrate health financing through partnerships with additional health insurance providers and has launched a new interface for its assistance officers to improve the participant experience.
