BR-040 to implement electronic Free Flow toll system
The concessionaire Elovias is implementing a 'Free Flow' electronic toll system on the BR-040 highway. The new system, which uses cameras and sensors to identify vehicles without the need for booths or barriers, is scheduled to begin operations on November 4, 2026, at km 831 in Simão Pereira, Minas Gerais.
This electronic system will replace the conventional toll plaza currently located at km 819.3. Drivers using electronic tags will be charged automatically. Those without tags must pay via the Elovias website or app within 30 days to avoid traffic penalties.
To prevent a surge in fines, experts emphasize the need for clear communication. This follows a previous implementation on the Rio-Santos highway where the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) had to cancel over 800,000 fines because drivers were unaware of the new charging method.
