Brandenburg seeks volunteers for radon measurement program

The Brandenburg Consumer Protection Ministry and the State Office for Occupational Safety, Consumer Protection and Health (LAVG) are launching a radon prevention measurement program. Authorities are currently seeking volunteers in 18 municipalities across the districts of Uckermark, Märkisch-Oderland, Elbe-Elster, and Oberspreewald-Lausitz to participate in the study.

Participants will receive free measurement boxes for twelve months starting in early 2027 to monitor radon concentrations in private homes or workplaces. Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that results from the decay of natural uranium in the soil and can accumulate in indoor spaces, increasing the risk of lung cancer.

While previous investigations in Brandenburg have not indicated a need to designate specific radon prevention areas due to hazardous concentrations, the Radiation Protection Act requires regular monitoring. The selection of these specific municipalities was based on geological criteria and population density. Participation aims to improve the existing data set; if elevated levels are detected, mitigation measures such as improved building sealing may be implemented.
