Brandon McNulty wins men's road world championship in Montreal

American cyclist Brandon McNulty won the men’s elite road race at the 2026 World Championships in Montreal, Canada. McNulty secured the victory after a decisive solo attack launched with 32 kilometers remaining in the 273.7-kilometer race. His performance marks the first time an American has won the men’s elite road world title since 1993.

Australia’s Michael Matthews took the silver medal, narrowly beating the Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel, who finished third. Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro delivered a historic performance, finishing in fifth place, just one second behind the podium.

The race took place in the absence of defending champion Tadej Pogačar, who was unable to compete due to an injury sustained during the Vuelta. The challenging course featured significant climbs, including Mont-Royal, which played a critical role in the final selection of riders.
