2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal

Overview

American cyclist Brandon McNulty won the men’s elite road race at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada. McNulty, a rider for UAE Team Emirates, secured the gold medal following a solo attack approximately 32 to 33 kilometers from the finish line on a 273.7-kilometer course. He finished 13 seconds ahead of Australian Michael Matthews, who took silver, while Mathieu van der Poel claimed bronze.

McNulty, who previously won the junior world time trial title ten years ago, described the victory as a “miracle” after navigating the grueling course for over six hours. This win marks the first time an American has won in this category since 1993. Following the victory, McNulty is expected to compete in several Italian classics, including the Giro dell'Emilia, Tre Valli Varesine, and Il Lombardia, while wearing the rainbow jersey.

The win has sparked controversy within the cycling community. Observers highlighted a prominent celebration by Mauro Gianetti, a director for UAE Team Emirates, at the finish line. This interaction prompted former professional Eric Boyer to make sarcastic remarks regarding the “transparency of the performance,” reigniting debates concerning doping and tactical efficiency.

To celebrate the victory, Colnago has unveiled a special iridate livery for the Y1Rs bicycle, designed exclusively for McNulty to use at the Giro dell’Emilia. The custom frame features a glossy black carbon base with a glitter effect inspired by the stars on the American flag, alongside color-block bands of blue, red, yellow, and green representing the rainbow stripes. Commemorative details include a headset cover featuring the date of the victory, a maple leaf, and an “ace of flowers.”
