Brașov City Council Allocates Over 1 Million Lei for Restoration of Historic Shrines
The Brașov City Council will co‑finance more than 1 million lei to restore ten historic wayside shrines in the Șchei district. The project, part of the municipality’s largest heritage‑restoration program launched last year, is funded through a European Regional Development Programme grant covering 2 % of the total €13.98 million cost. The shrines, including the Captain Ilie Birț and the Cross of Justice, have suffered severe degradation and will be repaired by certified restorers using traditional techniques.
In addition to structural restoration, the plan includes creating small parks and interpretive elements around each shrine to enhance cultural tourism and provide recreational spaces for residents. The comprehensive approach aims to link the shrines visually and narratively, reinforcing the historic character of the area.
