Romania hit by severe storms and flood warnings across dozens of counties

Romanian authorities issued widespread meteorological alerts as heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds struck the country. The National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management placed rivers in 27 counties under a Yellow flood warning, while several regions, including Cluj, Bihor, Brașov, Olt and Buzău, received Orange warnings for rapid runoff, flash floods and gusts up to 90 km/h. Local prefects and city mayors reported damage such as fallen trees, broken power poles, blocked roads, and flooded basements and courtyards. In Olt County, up to 97 liters of water per square metre fell, harming wheat, rapeseed and other crops. In Bihor, Oradea and surrounding localities, emergency crews cleared fallen trees and a downed utility pole. Brașov recorded 16 flooded basements and several vehicles trapped in water‑filled passages. Bucharest’s mayor announced three new underground rain‑water retention basins to mitigate future flooding, with one already completed and others under construction. The storm system is expected to persist through early July, prompting officials to advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from trees and power lines, and report emergencies to 112.
